French B1 Reading Practice: The Train That Never Came
A small delay, a slowly rising irritation, and strangers who start talking to each other. This B1 text is built on the tenses that carry a mood.
Le train qui ne venait pas
L'annonce est tombée à 19 h 12 : le train de Bordeaux aurait au moins une heure de retard. Personne n'a réagi, comme si tout le monde s'y attendait.
J'avais un livre, donc l'attente ne me dérangeait pas au début. Vers 20 heures, la voix a répété la même phrase, en ajoutant simplement « pour une durée indéterminée ». Une femme à côté de moi a soupiré : « C'est toujours pareil le vendredi. »
Nous avons commencé à parler. Elle rentrait voir sa mère, qui venait d'être opérée. Un étudiant s'est approché, puis un homme qui devait prendre une correspondance qu'il allait manquer de toute façon.
À 21 h 30, quand le train est enfin arrivé, nous nous sommes presque regrettés de monter. Nous nous étions installés dans cette attente comme dans une salle de séjour.
Dans le wagon, chacun a retrouvé son téléphone. Personne n'a échangé de numéro.
English translation
The announcement came at 7.12 pm: the Bordeaux train would be at least an hour late. Nobody reacted, as if everyone had been expecting it.
I had a book, so at first the wait did not bother me. Around eight o'clock the voice repeated the same sentence, simply adding "for an undetermined period". A woman next to me sighed: "It's always the same on Fridays."
We started talking. She was going home to see her mother, who had just had an operation. A student came over, then a man who had a connection to catch that he was going to miss anyway.
At 9.30 pm, when the train finally arrived, we almost regretted getting on. We had settled into that wait as if it were a living room.
In the carriage, everyone went back to their phone. Nobody exchanged a number.
Why this is B1
The story is short but the time structure is layered: an announcement about the future in the past, a recent past with venir de, and a plus-que-parfait for the state the group had reached. The last two lines carry their meaning by implication, which is a B1 reading skill.
