Swedish B1 Reading Practice: Learning to Cook
A text about learning something slowly, which happens to describe how language learning works too. Written for B1 readers who can follow an argument.
Att lära sig laga mat
Länge trodde jag att matlagning handlade om att följa ett recept. Jag vägde allt, jag höll tiderna, och resultatet blev ändå tråkigt.
Det som förändrade saken var en kommentar från min mormor. Hon sa att hon aldrig följde mängderna, eftersom ett recept inte kan veta vad som finns i ditt kylskåp. Hon smakade, hon justerade, hon började om.
Jag testade. De första veckorna var uppriktigt sagt dåliga. Sedan märkte jag att jag kände igen saker: ögonblicket när löken måste ur pannan, lukten som betyder att det redan är för sent.
I dag lagar jag tre rätter av fyra utan att tänka. Resten läser jag fortfarande recept till, men jag läser dem annorlunda: som förslag, inte som order.
Jag tror att det är så man lär sig vad som helst. Man upprepar tillräckligt ofta för att regeln ska bli en reflex.
English translation
For a long time I thought cooking was about following a recipe. I weighed everything, I kept to the timings, and the result was still dull.
What changed things was a comment from my grandmother. She said she never followed the quantities, because a recipe cannot know what is in your fridge. She tasted, she adjusted, she started over.
I tried it. The first weeks were frankly bad. Then I noticed that I recognised things: the moment the onion has to come out of the pan, the smell that means it is already too late.
Today I cook three dishes out of four without thinking. For the rest I still read recipes, but I read them differently: as suggestions, not as orders.
I think that is how you learn anything at all. You repeat often enough for the rule to become a reflex.
Why this is B1
The text argues a point instead of telling a plot, which is the step from A2 to B1. It uses a cleft sentence, reported speech in the past, and a purpose clause with för att, all inside everyday kitchen vocabulary.
